Why Some Home Based Internet Businesses Work, and Why Some Don't
Have you ever wondered why some people who run their own home based or internet business succeed, and why some fail? Look, let me give you a little inside information: Most people who are running their own business do not make money. That's right!
I can safely say that most of the people I run into who claim to have "an internet business" or an "internet presence" based from their home, are actually not making any money beyond their expenses. You don't believe me? Think about this. The internet and home based businesses have been around for a while.
You may know someone or of someone who has their own web business or who has a web site but, in all honesty, do you know anyone right now who is really making money, I mean some good money from their business efforts?
I'm not being pessimistic or negative, just stating the facts. Yet, if you spend anytime on your computer (and I'm sure you do) you'll notice that there are a ton of "Business Opportunities" out there that, if you believed all the hype, would convey the message that "everyone is involved and everyone is making fistfuls of cash...why aren't you?" You know what, that just isn't true.
Now, why is it that very few business opportunists really succeed? In some ways that question goes to the heart of the matter, and that question can also be difficult to answer. It goes to the heart of the question because, if answered fully, it would also explain what it DOES take to succeed. It's also difficult to answer because each person who tries and succeeds and each person who tries and fails has a different personality and a different set of background experiences; and yet again, most people do not really succeed when attempting to run their own home based internet business. Why? I believe I can boil it down to 3 fundamental reasons, reasons that will also shed some light on what it really does take to succeed and make money.
First off, you need to decide what your talents and strengths are. Do you have an interest in motorcycles and touring on a motorcycle? Then why would you try and put together a web site on "Making Money with email?" when you really have no interest in that area.
Second, the person has chosen the wrong business. Let's say you've picked a business that does fit your personality and interests, but it still doesn't work. One of the problems people have is they choose a home based business that just will not work. Let me give you an example. A few years back I went to a print shop to have some work done. While there the owner talked to me a little bit about a "new business opportunity" that he was involved with and was making "lots of money" at. The business was "SkyBiz." Did you ever hear of that one? Anyway, I put quite a bit of effort into that business and, you know what, the FTC came and closed them down for a myriad of reasons. The details of why would be too numerous to cover here, the main thing is this: it was a bad business model. That's what I'm trying to say here, you need to separate the good business models from the bad business models.
Third, you've found a business that matches your interests and talents, you've checked it out and the business itself is a sound model that you can pattern yourself after. However, you start out with good intentions, inevitably you face a few obstacles and you're not sure if you want to continue. Well guess what, when you start out there's a learning curve involved that you need to be aware of. Many people will fail in running their own business because they simply stop running it or "quit" too soon. At the start of any new undertaking there's a lot of new "Learning" that takes place because you are involved with a new process and a new business.
Give it some time, give it some more effort and continue to patiently learn, if you've chosen a business area that interests you, and you've investigated the soundness of the model, then keep plugging away, eventually the rather steep learning curve will lesson and you'll start to recognize that some of the same issues coming up look familiar, because you've solved them before, and you'll find that you are becoming more successful.
In summary, 3 reasons why a person may fail in running their own home based or internet based business:
1. Involvement with a business they really have no interest in.
2. Involvement with a business model that is bad or that makes success nearly impossible.
3. Not being patient and willing to stick it out, especially in the beginning, until their experiences are equal to their duties; i.e. giving up too soon and too early while the learning curve is still steep.
